Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
