European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
