Individual confesses to sexual crimes targeting children at summer camp
An individual who spiked candy with sedative and gave them to children at a summer camp in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two children who were nine and ten years old.
Jon Ruben was detained after eight minors and a grown-up fell ill at the location in the summer month.
The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, confessed to a multiple criminal counts when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.
Nevertheless, he refused to admit one particular crime he was charged with, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.
Ruben was remanded in custody before a further hearing on late November.
'Treat game'
The prosecutor, prosecuting, outlined Ruben's offending to the judicial body.
She stated his those affected were under-privileged children who were attending a youth camp which he operated.
The man conducted a "sweet game" with the minors, the prosecutor stated, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to eat sweets "rapidly".
She told the court Ruben had engaged in this activity with the children "repeatedly", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the subsequent day.
She said the man had been able to explain this for many years as the children being "overexcited from fun", until his stepson had worries in recently.
The prosecutor continued: "In the summer" his family member had worries about the situation, for good reason.
"They decided to examine in the individual's items."
The legal counsel stated items including lubricant, ointment and medical needles were located, and his family member notified the law enforcement about his worries.
She explained the defendant continued to engage in the "treat game" with six youngsters that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the subsequent day.
"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that point," she added.
The police watchdog, the police conduct office, had stated that it was examining law enforcement's management of the events.
Mrs Prior said the children were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson called the police a second time.
She stated the defendant then engaged in the "candy game" in a room of five minors.
