Senate Passes Legislation to Make Public Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will force the release of investigative files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a almost unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House gave in after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a case that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have waited long enough. Those affected have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer said in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Let the truth come out. Ensure full disclosure.”

Future Action

This legislation next heads to Trump for his signature. Trump indicated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Even though the president has for an extended period dismissed the controversy over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the measure over the weekend, and stated he would give his assent if it comes to him.

Response

The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their representatives who were present in a House gallery, cheered after the bill was approved. Lone dissent came from a GOP representative, who stated he feared the measure would make public identifying details of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
