Social Media Content Creators Driving Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Experimental Drug Acquiring Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting customers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an investigational injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users administering substances of uncertain source.

Some professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Elimination

According to TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic material and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using the platform's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, filled with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.

After minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted contact information, where most transactions occur. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about weight, health issues or past usage.

Item Information and Pricing

Inside these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it actively monitored harmful material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“People are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to recent cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has previously encountered patients injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
