The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.
We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.
An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
