The moment is optimal to alter Manchester United's system - Amorim insists.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple senior players absent from the holiday period victory against Newcastle United.

Manager Ruben Amorim says that altering Man Utd's tactical system due to external noise would have signaled "the finish" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his trademark three-at-the-back setup with wing-backs and opted to field an traditional back four with two defensive midfielders.

By his own admission this effectively transformed into a six-man defensive block in the final phase as his side dug in for a win - securing just their second-ever clean sheet of the season.

While he once famously said that not even the highest authority could compel him to adjust his approach, Amorim maintains the ability to experiment with different formations has remained part of his long-term vision.

Yet, he emphasizes he could only implement the change when his team were faring sufficiently well - lest it would seem as if he was giving in to outside criticism.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I recognized perhaps I don't have the personnel to perform effectively in that system, but it was the beginning of a project," he stated.

"The goal was to forge an identity. Now is a different moment. We don't have a lot of personnel, and we have to adapt, so they see why we are changing.

"This isn't because of the pressure of you guys, or the fans.

"When media discuss altering the system repeatedly, I can't make a change because the squad will think I'm altering things because of external voices and I believe that is the end for the coach.

"When we are playing well in our system, that becomes the moment to evolve.

"This will help us grow into a stronger team because when our full complement of players return, we are not intending to use three defenders exclusively."

Injury Challenges Persist

With just two wins in eight games before defeating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is right to state his side have been playing well.

He is, though, operating with a severely stretched roster, with multiple senior players already ruled out for the forthcoming home game against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will increase if midfielder Mason Mount is unable to shake off the injury that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will miss the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is understood to be pushing his boss to let him to make a comeback following his hamstring problem.

"Bruno is already telling me he needs to train," said Amorim. "But there is no chance he is going to feature against Wolves. Definitely not. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Leadership Endures

However, the Portuguese star will likely continue to be a prominent presence, as whereas most unavailable players watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was seen keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his captain to carry on offering input.

"The guy is a natural leader," he affirmed. "He cannot be that guy that when he is absent, he's silent and speaking. He's always communicating. That's why he's the skipper.

"There are bad things at times - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a lot of good things. Even after he finishes treatment, he goes to observe the other guys practicing. There are a lot of things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he wants my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a true captain."

Recovery Timeline for Injured Personnel

Although the exact date for the captain's return - and that of other unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is uncertain, before the conclusion of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental duty.
